The best detective games where you question suspects
Some detective games are about finding clues. These are about the conversation: who you ask, what you ask, and when you show your hand.
We make one of the games below, so take this list with that in mind. Every other game on it is one we would recommend to anyone who likes the interview-room part of crime stories.
Break the Suspect (2026, browser and iPhone)
Best for: questioning suspects in your own words. A voice-played police interrogation game. You get a briefing, question two to four AI suspects in any order, show evidence, and win only with a full confession. No dialogue trees: you ask anything, out loud or typed. A new case every few days. Free to start in a phone browser. Play it here.
L.A. Noire (2011)
Best for: reading faces. A 1940s Los Angeles police story where interviews hinge on watching a suspect's expression and choosing whether to believe, doubt or accuse. Still the reference point for interrogation in games.
Her Story (2015)
Best for: piecing together a police interview. You search a database of old police interview clips by keyword and assemble the truth yourself. Short, clever and unlike anything else.
Ace Attorney series
Best for: catching contradictions. Courtroom cross-examinations where you press witnesses and present evidence at the exact moment their testimony falls apart.
Disco Elysium (2019)
Best for: deep detective role-play. A dialogue-heavy detective RPG where your detective's personality shapes every conversation.
Return of the Obra Dinn (2018)
Best for: pure deduction. No one to question, only the scenes of how each sailor died. You work out names and fates from evidence alone.
The Case of the Golden Idol (2022)
Best for: puzzle-box crime scenes. Frozen moments around a series of deaths. Fill in who did what and why from clues in the scene.
Shadows of Doubt
Best for: sandbox investigation. A procedurally generated city where you break into apartments, trace phone calls and follow leads with no fixed path.
