Learn English by playing a detective game

Case file 01 · 5 minute read

Most English practice is polite. A suspect is not. That is the point.

If you are learning English, you already know the drill: a lesson, a list of words, a quiz that tells you that you were right. Then a real conversation starts and the words arrive late, or not at all.

Break the Suspect puts you in the one place where you cannot stay quiet: an interview room. A suspect is waiting. You have questions, evidence and a captain who wants a confession. The game runs in English, and every answer you get back is in English, so the practice is the game.

Why conversation practice beats a study app

Three things happen in an interview that rarely happen in a lesson.

None of it is graded. Nobody corrects your grammar mid-sentence. You get something better: a reply that makes sense, and a reason to say the next thing.

Voice or typing, your call

You can hold the microphone and talk, or type the same question. That matters if you are shy about your accent, or playing on a bus. Both routes use the same English, and both get the same answer. Start typed, move to voice when you are ready.

A ten-minute practice loop

  1. Read the briefing. It is short, and it gives you the vocabulary you will need: alibi, witness, timeline, evidence.
  2. Ask three open questions in a row. "Tell me about the argument", not "Did you argue?"
  3. Pick one detail and ask again from another angle. Repetition with a twist is where fluency lives.
  4. Show an exhibit and describe it out loud before you slide it across.
  5. At the end, sum up the story in four sentences. That is a free speaking exercise, and it is how you find out what you actually understood.

What it costs

The briefing and your first five questions are free on every case, up to seven while the interview is going somewhere. After that it is $4.99 for one case, $10.99 a month, or $89.99 a year. A new case arrives every few days, so the practice does not run out.

You do not need to install anything. Open the game in Safari or Chrome, allow the microphone, and start. An iPhone app is in testing.

Ready to be questioned? Your first five questions are on the house.
